A large number of women and men were temporarily arrested after Tehran police started intensifying a crackdown on women and men over the Islamic dress code, eye-witnesses from several parts of the capital said, in Tehran, Iran, 15 June 2011. In several squares of the capital, police and vice-units stopped women for their alleged un-Islamic outfits and many were transferred to police stations for temporary detainment, witnesses said. Iranian police has several times warned confronting women, dressed ‘contrary to Islamic norms’ such as wearing Bermuda-style pants, tight coats, loose scarves and no socks.
